Progressive Summarization is a note-taking technique developed by Tiago Forte that focuses on layered highlighting to make notes more actionable and easier to find later.

Core Concepts

  • Layer 0: Save the original content exactly as I found it
  • Layer 1: Bold the parts that catch my attention (aim for ≤10%)
  • Layer 2: Highlight the absolute key insights (≤10% of bold)
  • Layer 3: Write a quick summary in my own words
  • Layer 4: Create something new from the insights
An illustrative layered note places an own-word summary above selected passages and a retained source. Side annotations explain quick scanning, selective emphasis and checking the original context. A branch points to a new piece of writing when there is a use for the note.
Compression stays useful when the original context remains reachable. This illustrative specimen names the operations rather than assigning layer numbers; apply further summarization when the note warrants it. Original diagram based on Tiago Forte, Forte Labs, Progressive Summarization: A Practical Technique for Designing Discoverable Notes (2017); Tiago Forte, Forte Labs, Progressive Summarization III: Guidelines and Principles (2017).

Benefits

  • Find important information without re-reading everything
  • Maintain full context while surfacing key points
  • Transform notes into actionable resources
  • Integrate naturally with Knowledge Management systems
  • Support Just-In-Time Learning approaches

Implementation Guidelines

  • Only summarize notes that prove valuable over time
  • Bold content that resonates personally
  • Keep each layer to approximately 10% of the previous
  • Use Layer 3 for personal insights and connections
  • Transform Layer 4 into blog posts and project ideas

Workflow Process

  1. Save - Capture interesting content (Layer 0)
  2. Bold - Mark key parts during first read
  3. Highlight - Identify game-changing insights on second pass
  4. Summarize - Write synthesis when needed for projects
  5. Create - Transform into new content when inspired

Best Practices

  • Start with quality sources worth revisiting
  • Focus on personal relevance over completeness
  • Build layers progressively, not all at once
  • Connect insights across different sources
  • Use summaries as springboards for creation
