Flow is the mental state of complete absorption in an activity. Coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, it represents the optimal human experience where:

  • Time seems to disappear
  • Actions feel effortless and automatic
  • Focus is complete and undistracted
  • Skills match perfectly with challenge level
  • Sense of control and mastery emerges

Key Components

  • Clear goals and immediate feedback
  • Balance between challenge and skill level
  • Deep concentration on the present moment
  • Loss of self-consciousness and time awareness
  • Autotelic experience - intrinsically rewarding
The diagram separates three conditions associated with flow—clear goals, challenge matched to perceived skill, and immediate feedback—from the experience of absorbed attention. It notes that conditions support but do not guarantee flow.
Flow research distinguishes conditions of engagement from the experience itself. This conceptual schematic uses clear goals, perceived challenge–skill balance and feedback, not a measured “flow zone.” Original diagram based on Jeanne Nakamura and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Handbook of Positive Psychology, The Concept of Flow (2002).
