Deliberate Practice is a focused and structured approach to improving skills through targeted exercises and feedback.

Core Components

Goal Setting

  • Define specific objectives
  • Break down into manageable tasks
  • Align with long-term goals

Focused Practice

  • Concentrate on weaknesses
  • Use repetition and variation
  • Maintain high intensity

Feedback and Reflection

  • Seek expert guidance
  • Analyze performance
  • Adjust strategies
An expert helps choose a specific target and practice task. The learner attempts the task, compares immediate feedback with the target, adjusts one feature and retries. A second review checks whether the goal should change.
Deliberate practice combines an individualized target, informative feedback and revised attempts. Conceptual loop based on the researchers’ definition; it does not imply that repetition alone guarantees expertise. Original diagram based on Ericsson and Harwell, Frontiers in Psychology, Deliberate Practice and Proposed Limits on the Effects of Practice on the Acquisition of Expert Performance (2019).
